January 2010

2009, a year of actually seeing some movies in theaters sometimes.

While this year may have been the year I’ve watched more movies than any other year in the decade, guess what? I still haven’t seen shit. Sadness but trueness. So this is not a best of list, not a set in stone 2009 tome to walk down the mountain, it’s a bunch of movies I really enjoyed out of the stuff I saw, which was a good amount but def not everything. So eat it. 2009 – go!

Dark knight re-release

it’s a cheat, I don’t care. Even tho I saw it 4 times in the theater and numerous times on a ‘screener’ it still held up, and so fuck you, it came out again this year and its still fucking great. it’s a comic book movie and it is better then most of the shit I didn’t even see. that’s right, id rather pay for the same movie 5 times than see anything by roland emmerech (ugh) or anyone else. Its so right.

Coraline

a kid’s movie, but like most great kids movies, is for adults also, and is kinda creepy. Add that its in 3d and written by neil gaiman and I’m sold. 3d always adds a star for me.

Watchmen

yes there was no squid and at times it was borderline obnoxious and pretentious which is just how is doesn’t feel in the comic (that’s right kids it’s a comic, not a graphic novel) and cranky old beardy goth rings alan moore wont have anything to do with it but we all know he wont be able to resist himself one day and watch it and see silk spectre’s nipples and go ‘fuck, she does have good nipples doesn’t she?’ in some deepy bass hitchhikers guide to the galaxy voice and nothing will have changed in the universe. The movie hits the right beats and yeah its missing some really choice moments but it’s a fucking movie, an adaptation, a jazz solo greatest hits style. Its great. so live with it. it did what nobody thought could be done. and if it didnt make sense the first time, watch it again and do some thinking.

Observe and report

if you look at a poster or hear a synopsis or see that rogan seth is in it you may roll your eyes and never think about this movie again. But if you add the name jody hill (writer/director/neck snapper) to any of those movie descriptors it changes things, because things are now going to get fucked up (in the best way possible). This movie fits right beside its siblings foot fist way and east down and bound, and it may even be the most troubled of the group; where other movies of the type dance around uncomfortably, this movie has no problem addressing shit and being hilarious. Yes, seth is doing his best Danny McBride impression in the way other actors ape woody in his films, but it still might be the best thing rogan has done, and its another perfect work from hill.

The cove

this is prob the best, most horrifying and somehow uplifting doc ive seen in a very long time. It just needs to be seen. it’s a doc that somehow plays like its own Hollywood movie version of itself. It works. It owns you.

District 9

I was ready to hate this but good lord it nailed it. Its obvious and low rent but its just terrific. a sci fi classic right out the gate.

It might get loud

a wonderful kick ass guitar doc with jimmy page, edge and jack white. A great meeting of the souls and lovers of music and craft and creativity.

Star trek

that’s right, I fucking hated star trek the more I thought about it after seeing it for the first time. I didn’t have problems with the geoffcon reboot it storyline, I thought it was pretty neat, but I despised how theme lacking it was, how overly dumb it was, how goofy it got and how it lacked the soul of the original. How it played dumb and didn’t feel like a true sci-fi movie. There was nothing under the onion peels. But despite all this, it was a great fun film? Yeah. The acting? They got it done. It was star wars in a star trek suit. Give me a star wars like this, please. Then give me my star trek with some intelligence and give the universe some balance please. Despite me and despite itself, It was a fun fun fun time. it was a good movie. there i said it.

Capitalism a love story

yup. Its MM, blah blah you like him you hate him blah. Is message is always on the right track tho kids. must pain you to know it.

Toy story ½ re-release

they still hold up, and the 3d was beautiful. Pop some childhood in your face.

Tomorrow, the decade of movies. oh boy.

the trap

so the first day of 2010 is on it’s end, and i’ve spent it wrapped in thinking about 2009 and fixing up my decade/year best of lists, flipping my bad kitties calender to january, and playing video games (new mario wii, shadow complex and bionic commando rearmed). so all in all nothing has changed. but, hopefully after today my head will be swiveled forward and ready to look into the now that is the future. and stuff.

i plan on not saying the word ‘like’ and the word ‘awesome’. or at least trying. itll be rough cause thats like half my fucking volcabulary. sorry i cant stop saying ‘fucking’.

2009 – ugh

Well it had to come sooner or later, another end of year wrapy uppy survey thing. i do them every year, too bad for you.

1. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?

Watched chinatown, worked in a bookstore, cut someone open, didnt go to icon for the first time in 15 years, met niki, watched lost, shoveled and didn’t fall over. Its was a quiet year.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I didn’t make any this past year, i’m really just gonna do them as i think of em.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

4. Did anyone close to you die?
i lost someone really close to me, and some close to those i know, and that feels just as horrible.

i dont feel like i failed, unless its not getting enough work done. then ive failed amazingly. motivate me, failure! didnt get super powers either.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

My body runs on illness.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

i really cant think of one for this.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
prob the management where i work, and all the cretins in the world that somehow think theyre more important than anyone else and people should be left to be sick.

14. Where did most of your money go?
the year went with me not having so much money, so mostly bills and pills.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
kinda the same as last year – watching claude grow, hanging with the lady, seeing fishbone some more, great art, seeing my 202 buddays and all my friends getting married!

16. What songs will always remind you of 2009?
well, here are my top ten listened to songs of 09 as determened by my last.fm scrobbler.

22. Did you fall in love in 2009?

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
life

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
the same as usual but this year there were more pants and more coats.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
for some reason this year i gained a crush on erin burnett, and claire from lost.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

ill add one to the amazing bubbling of selfish people, somehow supporting a corporation bailout but scoff at individual bailout; the ignorant cretins that oppose health care for everyone. so selfish.

37. Who did you miss?
bunches of people i dont see enough, bolivia the mostest.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
niki

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.
hug.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
I kinda like the way you dot your J’s
With giant circles of naïveté
The kind of circles include everything
Don’t mean to damn you with the faintest praise
It’s just a symptom of the blithe age
Walter Lippman, he would be amazed.

old year’s resolutions

i’m pretty sure this year i am going to spend more money than i should. this isn’t a change, i do this every year but i think it’s one i’m going to keep going because i dont make enough cash but i like food and i like video games. this is really all i spend money on anyway. oh, comic books. lots of comic books.

this year i noticed people’s eyes are getting farther apart. i will call this ‘evolution’. but maybe soon we wont have eyes on the front of our face but the side like some kind of fishy lizard thing. the amount of dates will lower but sex will still happen just as much.

this last year i discovered eggs in a nest and it is how i am starting this year; like the yummy egg in a hole in a toast, i will be a little purple bruised eyed bird baby sticking his head out trying to check shit out. the year will go like it always does, half not bad with lots of shit mixed in, but i will try and react to it differently, like a naive little wet thing that just entered the world ready to give everything a chance. i will either learn to fly, or fried and eaten with some hash browns. delicious.

happy new year
